So I decided to take my F30 in to a BMW specialist and do a “pre-purchase” inspection... well more like post-purchase by now. And low and behold...

Kinja'd!!!

Bent Rim from the inside.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Oil plug and sensor dripping.

Some other stuff showed up too, like the burnt blower fan which I made them replace before I bought it, the warning was still there, and my failed attempt at updating the Bluetooth software, and they said the shitty paint repair job the used car dealer did was... shit.

Lesson learned, insist your mechanic do a more thorough PPI and ACTUALLY PUT IT ON A LIFT to check everything. I guess on the bright side, the specialist mechanic gave a thumbs up to everything else, no structural damage or anything. Now if you excuse me, I’ve got some yelling to do.

UPDATE: Used car lot is taking it up. Got a new gasket for the sensor and a new drain plug. Will monitor it for the next 2 weeks before it goes into storage, but I’m confident that’s the only issue. It was actually seeping around the sensor when they took the shield off.

Oh well, I figured absolute worse case is a new oil pan, I’m still ahead over buying it CPO, which the BMW dealers wanted another 8 grands over what I paid. Right now they only recommended a new sensor and oil plug, which I’m going to try to get the used car dealer to cover with their crappy 90 day warranty.

That’s quite a healthy crop of rust in the second picture too.

Normal for a Quebec car. They salt the roads like it’s free. Ontario is not as bad, my Solstice looks like that too at 11 years.

Take a look into CARLY for BMW if you haven’t already. It’s from a German company so sometimes the website is tough to navigate, but they have a OBDII wireless dongle and an app that will help you pull all of the BMW Computer codes. It’ll show you the OBDII codes also, but BMW has a separate code system that you cant see without special computers, this makes it easy for you to see what the dealer would see.

I think I spent $50 for the app and I dont remember what it was for the dongle, but it was money well spent. For some/ most BMW’s it gives you a lot of coding options and even the ability to register a new battery with the car. If you own a BMW, it’s a seriously helpful tool.

Really though, this isn’t all that bad. Could be a lot worse. Repair the bent wheel, use it as a winter set.

They wanted $8k more for a CPO? Jesus. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you pay for the car? My wife’s BMW was a CPO, but it was only a grand over what the non CPO vehicles were selling for.

Well I bought it at a used car lot (major chain one in Ontario, Carmax-esque minus the warranty part). I was comparing mine versus the ones I found listed as CPO by the BMW dealers. I paid 28k tax in for mine, the others want at least 32k plus taxes. Mind you it’s Canadian, not US, and granted mine was pretty barebones, didn’t have nav nor any luxury amenities. Other difference is a clean Carproof, the CPO ones had like 2-9k damage records at least.

It’s surface corrosion, wire wheel it and Por-15 it, no biggie.

Yeah I’m not too worried about that, I mean I bought this intended to be a DD, not a Concours queen. Probably going to hunt for a group deal for Krown or something.

Only catch here is I already have a set of 17" tires which I’m recycling...

I know a place that does wheel refinishing so I’ll just try to repair it. Or I might not even fix it, since I’m getting new rims for the said tires. Surprisingly it’s NOT causing any vibration.

I hate salt. The lot my spot was in senior year might as well have been Bonneville with the amount of salt they put down. In November the car was fine. By February the exhaust had rusted completely through, all the heatshields had desintegated, most of the posts for said shields were broken or compromised, every bolt was rusted on, and the fenders were shot. Sure it was a 14 year old Subaru but everything was solid before the winter. The rate of rot was impressive.

That’s because my summer car is a Solstice. Due for an oil change so I need to take it out.
